Copper Features

Our Copper and Brass Pedestal Soaking Tubs are based on Vintage Freestanding Copper chariot and bateau bath tubs dating from 1830-1870. Copper has been used to make lightweight, deep comfortable bathtubs for thousands of years. Bathing in copper was supposed to provide relief from aches and pains, reduced swelling and inflammation. It’s also rumored to offer a significant increase in your level of energy. Copper also inhibits the growth of microbes, thus providing a measure of protection against harmful germs and bacteria and it is also thought to have anti-carcinogenic properties. For thousands of years, people have been improving their health through the benefits of copper. The double-ended shape has been a foundation for freestanding bathtubs but single-ended slipper style bathing was far more customary in Victorian Europe.

We hand craft pure copper or brass sheets using a Vintage slipper and double slipper tubs as the patterns. All of our copper is 99.999% pure, with a large percentage coming from clean recycled sources. We use 12-16 gauge sheets depending upon the tub. Each sheet is cut to size, hand crafted and shaped into vintage forms to create the pieces needed to construct each tub. These rough parts are welded or brazed together before being smoothed and pressure tested to assure they are now ready for the final finishing.

Polished

Each tub is sanded ultra smooth using finer and finer grits until the surface is ready for the multi stage polishing process. The last stage is done by hand to ensure the finest gloss polish. The copper can be coated with a high solid high gloss clear lacquer to prevent oxidation or tarnish but can also be left uncoated to allow nature to age and patina the surface. Every bathtub will be truly unique and subtle characteristics (pitting, graining, slight undulations etc.) in the finished surface are not considered flaws but the characteristics of true hand crafted metal.

Patina

Patina’s can be applied to our Copper is a variety of looks, from a gently aged finish all the way to decades of age. Patinated is our lightest patina, we hand mist special aging chemicals onto the surface, this can be done very light or heavier to create a unique patina. Our Linear Patina is a weathered brushed copper finish, that represents approx. 3-4 years of tarnish, it has an almost rainbow of colors. The French Patina is our darkest patina, it is a more overall brown, umber almost black patina. We have in the past also supplied verdi gris which is a special green patina on copper that has been exposed to specific chemicals.

Nickel

Nickel can be applied in the form of electroplating if you prefer a shiny silvery surface rather than the more satin/matt look of Tin. The liquid nickel is electro-bonded to the copper forming a permanent bond, much like nickel fixtures where brass is copper plated before nickel plated.
